There is definitely something fun about mystery and secrets. If, like me, you really like the idea of a secret hidden storage compartment (even if, like me again, you have no idea what to hide in it), then there is no doubt: a hollow book is the thing for you! Of course, you could just buy one and it would be safer because you could lock it… But wait, where is the fun in that? Instead, I’ll show you here how to create a secret hollow book yourself!
To make your secret hollow book, you will need:
- a book (see below)
- some glue and a brush
- a plastic bag to protect the cover
- a craft knife
- some fabric
- and electric tape (not shown)
About the book
A hard cover book works better for this project. The book needs to be at least 300 pages, otherwise, you may not have enough room inside. I chose a book that looks old but any book will do as long as it is large enough. You should choose a book that will match what you have in your bookcase. There is no point in having a secret box in a book that stands out. Since we’ll destroy the inside of the book, don’t choose one you really like! I recommend buying it from a second-hand shop, for as little as 3$. I chose the book shown in the pictures because I thought its title added to the mystery. It is “Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe IV” which translate to “Memoirs from Beyond the Grave IV” from Chateaubriand.
We’ll leave some pages loose at the beginning of the book so that we can still show the first pages and pretend it’s a normal book. First, wrap those pages along with the book cover with the plastic bag to protect them. Then, glue the side of the remaining pages and let it dry under an heavy object to preserve its shape.
When it’s dry, trace a rectangle leaving a margin of about one inch (3 cm) all around it. Then, it’s time to cut along the lines with a craft knife. Remove a few pages and cut again. Try to keep the side as straight as you can, but do not worry about imperfections because they will be hidden under the fabric. Repeat until the compartment is deep enough.
Cut a piece of fabric large enough to cover the bottom and the sides of the cavity. Glue it inside. Do not worry about the fabric not fitting perfectly. You can simply trim the edges afterwards and add a border of electric tape for a nice finish.
All that’s left is filling the box with your precious belongings. It does not really matter what is in it. It’s a thrill just to know that something is hidden in that book. My kids stored some precious plastic jems in the secret book.
