Parachuting was an item on my bucket list of things to do at least once in my life. I can now cross it, I did it!
I did this tandem jump with Atmosphair. To sum up, I would say that it was an intense, but relatively short experience.
The preparation before the jump was rather quick. I just put on a combination and then the harness, which the instructor takes care of adjusting. Gloves and a hat are recommended to protect against the cool of fall season. However, now that I saw how I looked with it, I admit that if it was to be done again, I would do without the hat. It was not as cold as I feared. But hey, if I at least make you laugh while admiring my elegance, that’s at least something…
Then the instructor explained to me the parachuting steps and how to position myself correctly. In tandem, it’s really not complicated, it mainly involves staying stable and well centered so as not to interfere with his maneuvers during the free-fall. All that’s left is to get on the plane and there we go.
Once the jump altitude is reached, we kneel at the edge of the open door and the instructor initiates the jump. It was really the most intense moment of it all. The feeling of falling into the void is breathtaking. It is really striking. I took a deep breath, eyes wide opened. However, very quickly, the fall seemed to stabilize and transform to rather leave an impression of floating in the wind. It was as if I was in the air above a powerful fan. The free-fall lasts about 2 minutes in total.
When the parachute opened, I almost didn’t feel it. I thought that braking would be much more abrupt. And suddenly, I was sitting in the sky. It was surprisingly peaceful. We could talk without shouting and my instructor took the opportunity to show me several elements of interest in the landscape below. With the straps that control the parachute, I could steer us to turn to one side or the other. I just needed to avoid too tight turns, as I quickly realized that these made me nauseous!
After about ten minutes, we started to head towards the landing zone. Again, in tandem, it’s not complicated. I just needed to keep my legs up in front of me, and I ended up sitting in the field.
Challenge for YOU
Overall, I really enjoyed this parachute experience. The jump from the plane really is the highlight. Once I got back on the ground, I remember being disappointed that it was already over. I won’t make it a hobby, but it’s worth trying it at least once. If you have never done it, I encourage you to try it.
